The simplest community radio set up can consist of a low-power transmitter harnessed with an antenna, a tape recorder and a microphone. A motorcycle battery provides the power source. Its total weight may be much less than 10 kilograms. However, Nomad does not recommend such a primitive setup. It would not help the Community Radio Station to attain financial sustainability. The fact that the Indian Government has allowed five minutes of advertisements for every one hour of programming demands a level of sophistication to ensure that the Community Radio Station achieves its full potential. A very basic setup will not be able to make optimal use of this provision to generate financial resources to ensure that a radio station can sustain independently. |
